Every human being has the right to be literate. It is Education's charge to insure that this right is, as far as possible, met. It is an increasingly difficult charge, however, for over the decades the demands upon literate people have become more and more complex. For example, less than a century ago income tax forms were simple little postcards to be completed and mailed. That postcard has been transformed into pages of complicated text. Comparing literacy today with the literacy of yesterday is quite like comparing a jet airplane to a Model T Ford. The 504 and Special Education literacy program is responsive to the complexities of teaching literacy to all students (both special education and regular education). The program offers solid and extensive information on best teaching practices as well as on effective assessment of both student progress and teacher curricula. The literacy team is engaged in the providing professional development as well as in designing and implementing small research projects dedicated to improving curriculum and instruction - to the benefit of all the learners.
