If You Are...

  • cover of brochure Living with friends or family because you cannot afford rent;
  • Living on the beach, at a campground, in a park, or in a hotel;
  • Living in a tent, car, bus, or other non-permanent structure;
  • Living in an emergency or transitional shelter;
  • Living in a domestic violence shelter;
  • Living at any of the following:
    • Kauai:
      • Kauai Economic Opportunity Shelter,
      • Manaolana,
    • Hawaii:
      • Ka Hale O Kawaihae,
      • Office for Social Ministries,
    • Maui:
      • Ka Hale A Ke Ola,
      • Na Hale O Wainee,
    • Oahu:
      • Family Promise,
      • Institute for Human Services (IHS),
      • Loliana,
      • Maililand,
      • Next Step,
      • Ohana Ola O Kahumana,
      • Onemalu,
      • Hope for a New Beginning,
      • Waianae Civic Center,
      • Weinberg Village Waimanalo,
      • Lighthouse Shelter;
  • Without a regular place to stay at night; or
  • Awaiting foster care placement.

Then…

Your child may be eligible for certain educational rights or services under the McKinney-Vento Act.

Your Child’s Rights Include...

  • Immediate Enrollment...
    • The right to continue attendance in the school of origin, or the school of the attendance area where you are actually living; and
    • The right to initiate the dispute resolution process if you disagree with an enrollment decision.

  • Comparable Services...
    • The right to comparable services that are available to other students; and
    • The right to transportation to and from your school of origin, if feasible.

  • Transportation Services Options Include...
    • Public bus passes;
    • Mileage reimbursement;
    • Curb-to-curb services, if applicable; and/or
    • Modified bus routes.
