SCHOOL BUS POLICY CHANGES
EFFECTIVE JULY 2010
- No Refund Policy
Beginning July 1, 2010, the Department of Education
will adopt a strict NO REFUND policy on all school bus pass and one-way bus coupon purchases.
Parents and guardians are strongly urged to consider their children’s transportation
plans very carefully before purchasing
a bus pass or bus coupon.
Should a student transfer from one public school to another during
the school year, his/her bus pass account will be transferred to the new school. The new
school will then provide the student with a bus pass, provided that the child qualifies for
school bus service at the new school.
- Qualifying Distances
On January 1, 2010, the distance that a student in Grade 6 through 12 must reside from
school to qualify for public school bus service was increased from one mile to 1.5 miles.
This rule will remain in effect for the 2010-2011 school year. The distance that a student
in Grade K through 5 must reside from school to qualify for public school bus service remains
at one mile. Curb to curb services for qualifying special education students remain unchanged.
- Flat Rate Pricing
Effective school year 2010-2011, the DOE will institute a flat-rate pricing policy for
all school bus passes. The flat-rate policy is similar to the City's bussing service in
that the price of a school bus pass remains constant no matter the date of purchase. Once
again, parents and guardians are strongly urged to consider their children's transportation
plans carefully before they purchase a bus pass or bus coupon.
- Bus Pass Prices
The student
fare for 2010-2011 remains at $.75 per ride. Bus pass prices are as follows:
Bus Pass Prices
| |
Annual |
Quarterly |
| Roundtrip |
$225 |
$60 |
| One-way |
$112.50 |
$30 |
Bus pass prices are discounted to account for unanticipated student absences during the
school year. One-way bus coupons are $7.50 per sheet (10 coupons per sheet). All bus passes
and coupons are non-refundable, and can be purchased at your child’s school office.
- Application
Forms
Parents can download a 2010-2011 school bus pass application form at https://iportal.k12.hi.us/SBT/home.aspx
Completed forms should be returned to
your child’s school office
for processing. Parents can check on the status of their child’s bus pass application
by visiting the above website.
- Discontinuation of certain Oahu bus routes
In response to the DOE’s continuing struggle to reduce operating costs, certain
school bus routes on Oahu will be discontinued where City bussing services are available. In
addition to the bus routes that were discontinued last school year, new ones will be added
effective July 1, 2010. Please click on the “Discontinued
Oahu Bus Routes" tab above for a complete list of discontinued Oahu island school bus routes for 2010-2011.
Monthly youth city bus passes
are available for purchase at various stores on Oahu (Foodland, Times, 7-Eleven) as well
as other locations listed at http://www.thebus.org/Fare/youthFare.asp.
Students who qualify for free bus service may apply for a free city bus pass from the DOE.
Please contact your child’s school office for more information.
