Accreditation. All regular Hawaii public high schools, intermediate/middle schools, and eleven community schools for adults are accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Schools of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). An increasing number of elementary schools also seeks accreditation. There are currently fifteen elementary schools accredited with an anticipated five more schools to receive accreditation over the next few years.

The Standards Implementation Design (SID) is a framework for improving the effectiveness of all state, district and school units in supporting student standards. The SID process, which has been sanctioned by WASC, includes analyzing the unit's performance data, using the resulting information in planning improvement, implementing actions, and evaluating results, and is key to each school's accreditation process. Each school is visited by an external committee of educators who validateclass discussion the school's self-study through commendation and recommendations.

Our Teachers. More than 12,000 full-time educators are employed as public school classroom teachers, counselors, school librarians, student services coordinators, and resource teachers. Teachers are essential to student success, and the Department is committed to attracting and retaining the best and brightest teachers for its students.

Food Services. Hawaii's public school food services are among the best in the nation, serving 24 million nutritious meals annually to 80% of all students. Breakfast is available for all students at 96% of the schools. Students from low-income families may qualify for free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. The School Food Services Branch's mission is to prepare the students to learn.
