Distance Learning Options for Students

The Hawaii Department of Education recognizes the need and supports distance learning opportunities for its students.  The Department has adopted credit regulations that apply to all opportunities for awarding credit to include credits earned from out-of-state schools, community colleges, and universities.

Procedures for credit approval

The principal is responsible for evaluating each individual student’s claim for credits for correspondence school courses.  Credit may be granted only for those correspondence courses which:

  • Address the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards appropriate to grade level and content area;

  • Are comparable to those listed in the Department’s Authorized Courses and Code Numbers (ACCN); and,

  • Are offered by schools accredited by national or regional accrediting agencies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.  (The Distance Education and Training Council publishes a directory of accrediting institutions.)
